What is Visual Communication Design?

Visual Communication Design is the study of the application of art and design in communicating a portrayed message. Through this study program students get acknowledge how the application of art and design conceives solutions to problems in society enabling students to design a communication phenomenon through a visual element in a variety of media to create a change for the world. The DKV study program becomes a place for students to develop their creativity and innovation as well as their skills in the arts and design department to suit global competencies and future industrial needs.

Specialization / Focusing / Concentration

UMN’s Visual Communication Design study program has two specializations that can be chosen by students known as Visual Brand Design and Interaction Design.

Through Visual Brand Design, students will review more deeply about the application of art and design in displaying a brand visually in various forms and media and therefore students are expected to be able to design a brand identity and understand how it can be visually communicated in public by continually looking at the development of industries

Whereas through Interaction Design, students will pick up more about interaction design which includes designing an interactivity through visual design such as designing games, websites, board games or even interactive books. Students are expected to be able to design interactivity through various 2D and 3D media both digitally and conventionally. That way they not only design the visuals but also think about the technical planning of interactivity that will be carried out.

Prepare students to become designing graduates who are able to construct a work or product based on their deep understanding of designing in the form of visual communication with an entrepreneurial mindset and international vision. Students are expected to be able to provide solutions to solving visual communication problems by upholding their professional work ethics and other noble values.

Graduate Profile

DKV graduates are expected to become designing graduates who have the ability to create a result in both traditional and digital ways based on a deep understanding of design in the form of visual communication that is entrepreneurial and has an international outlook that can contribute to solving visual communication problems in society.


UMN’s architecture students will learn about the theory, practices and methods of designing during the their learning process in DKV courses. In general, the UMN’s DKV’s curriculum can be explained as follows:

1st year

Students will learn about the basic understanding of Visual Communication Design related to theory, history, and basic principles of design, as well as an introduction to creativity. In addition, students will also be introduced to visual related literacy.

2nd year

Students will learn about design methods and techniques for media production as well as an introduction to creative business. Throughout this year students will also begin to determine what specialization will be taken to be studied in more depth between visual brand design or interactive design.

3rd year

This year, students will review project designs, research designs, and sound designs. Despite this, students will also be introduced to an understanding of Intellectual Property Rights.

4th year

Students will carry out apprenticeship work in service bureaus or architectural consultants and also a year of preparation to work on the final project.

Partnership & Collaborations

UMN’s DKV has worked closely with the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) in making learning modules for childcare. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture, UMN’s DKV involved seventeen students in the process of designing and designing the educational module.

Once they have accomplished this, they collaborate with PT Samafitro through a consent visit to the company to provide direct experience to students about the development of the printing world in our postmodern society. In addition to this, UMN’s DKV has also been involved as a member of the Association of Visual Communication Design Study Programs (Asprodi DKV) to participate in advancing education in the field of visual communication design.

Kerja Sama Akademik

Teknik Elektro UMN telah bekerja sama dengan RFH Jerman dalam penyusunan model praktikum dan pelaksanaan praktikum dan pelaksanaan praktikum jarak jauh untuk mata kuliah Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Mahasiswa Teknik Elektro Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) melakukan simulasi perbaikan program sistem manufaktur pabrik secara jarak jauh. Proses perbaikan tersebut dilakukan di ruang Laboratorium Automasi Industri UMN. Sedangkan sistem manufaktur pabrik yang diperbaiki berada di Laboratorium Automasi (Automatisierunglabor) Rheinische Fachhochshule (RFH) Cologne Jerman. Perbaikan sistem manufaktur tersebut merupakan kegiatan Remote Lab Live Session dengan arahan Mr. Patrick Terber dari Rheinische Fachhochshule (RFH) Cologne Jerman. Dalam kegiatan tersebut, mahasiswa Teknik Elektro UMN dibagi menjadi dua kelompok. Mereka bekerja sama untuk memecahkan masalah yang terjadi pada sistem di RFH Cologne. Pola kerja yang diterapkan adalah kompetitif kolaboratif, di mana kelompok yang menemukan solusi terlebih dahulu dapat memberikan masukan dan bantuan kepada pendekatan masalah dari kelompok lainnya

Pertemuan Bimbingan Akademik

Mahasiswa diharuskan untuk mengikuti bimbingan akademik minimal 3 kali per semester. Jadwal bimbingan akademik akan diberikan oleh dosen pembimbing akademik masing-masing. Buku bimbingan akademik harus dibawa pada saat melakukan bimbingan akademik dan harus ditandatangani oleh dosen pembimbing akademik.

Continuing Education Department

Continuing Education Department (CED) adalah program pengembangan pendidikan di Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) yang merupakan bagian dari Grup Kompas Gramedia. Kami memiliki berbagai program dalam kursus bahasa, pengembangan manusia, Pusat Pengujian untuk sertifikasi nasional dan internasional, dan program pelatihan. CED UMN dirancang untuk memenuhi kebutuhan siswa sekolah menengah dan perguruan tinggi, serta masyarakat dan profesional.

Mahasiswa dianjurkan mencari sendiri perusahaan / instansi penerima kerja
magang yang sesuai dengan fokus Program Studi Teknik Elektro yaitu bidang
Industrial Automation. Informasi lowongan kerja magang dapat diperoleh dari
mahasiswa-mahasiswa lain, media sosial, job fair, iklan di media cetak ataupun
elektronik dan juga dapat menghubungi staf di Career Development Center (CDC)

Informasi Skripsi

Untuk menyelesaikan jenjang pendidikan Program Sarjana Strata-1 (S-1) di Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, mahasiswa harus menyusun, mempresentasikan, dan mempertahankan skripsi, di hadapan dewan penguji skripsi, sesuai dengan ketentuan program studi. Penyusunan skripsi
dilakukan secara perorangan dan dibimbing oleh dosen pembimbing yang dapat
dipilih langsung oleh mahasiswa dengan persetujuan dosen pembimbing tersebut.

Informasi Penting

Sehubungan dengan mulai berlakunya New Normal, maka UMN akan melangsungkan sistem pengajarannya sesuai dengan Siaran Pers Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia Nomor 137/sipers/A6/VI/2020 mengenai Panduan Penyelenggaraan Pembelajaran pada Tahun Ajaran dan Tahun Akademik Baru di Masa Pandemi COVID-19 Bab Sistem Pembelajaran di Lingkungan Perguruan Tinggi.

1. Gear

Gear melambangkan dunia keteknikan yang memiliki prinsip teknik yaitu menyelesaikan permasalahan dengan solusi yang tepat. Gear memiliki 10 mata gear terbuka untuk dapat menyatukan keberagaman mahasiswa teknik dengan rasa kekeluargaan sehingga saling terhubung satu sama lain. Gear berwarna biru melambangkan HIMFERA termasuk salah satu himpunan pada Fakultas Teknik dan Informatika di Universitas Multimedia Nusantara.


2. Daun

Daun melambangkan sustainable (berkelanjutan). Berkelanjutan yang dimaksud memiliki peribahasa, kelangsungan hidup daun di pohon selalu bertumbuh dan berkelanjutan. Bahkan ketika daun telah gugur, daun ini tetap bermanfaat menjadi pupuk bagi kelangsungan hidup pohon itu sendiri dan atau sekitarnya. Oleh karena itu, berdirinya HIMFERA bertujuan memberikan manfaat bagi anggota-anggota himpunan dalam berorganisasi dan dapat memberikan karya terbaik untuk almamater dan masyarakat di sekitarnya sehingga manfaat yang didapatkan tetap berkelanjutan. Warna hijau pada daun melambangkan keterbukaan HIMFERA dalam berkomunikasi dan menerima aspirasi mahasiswa Teknik Fisika dan Teknik Elektro di Universitas Multimedia Nusantara.

3. Kilatan Petir

Petir pada daun menjadi dasar tonggak dari daun tersebut. Dasar tonggak ini menentukan arah dari perjalanan organisasi kami untuk mewujudkan tujuan dari HIMFERA. Seperti kita ketahui bahwa sifat petir memiliki kekuatan yang sangat besar. Oleh karena itu, kami terinspirasi dari ilmuwan Benjamin Franklin saat menangkap petir menggunakan layangan dan energi tersebut dapat terkumpul menjadi muatan listrik yang bermanfaat untuk menghidupkan listrik. Dari sini kami memetik manfaat dari petir tersebut yaitu menjadi organisasi yang memiliki kemampuan mengambil keputusan yang sigap, tepat, dan dapat menjadi solusi ditengah permasalahan yang ada. Petir yang tidak berwarna untuk mencerminkan prinsip kerja yang transparansi. Transparansi bermakna keterbukaan dan pertanggung-jawaban atas keputusan yang sudah dibuat.

Untuk menyelesaikan Program Sarjana di Program Studi Teknik Elektro UMN dan lulusan dengan gelar Sarjana Teknik (S.T.), mahasiswa harus memenuhi beberapa persyaratan berikut:

  1. Telah menyelesaikan jumlah Satuan Kredit Semester (SKS) sejumlah 146 SKS, dimana dalam SKS tersebut telah termasuk SKS mata kuliah wajib dan SKS mata kuliah pilihan yang pada umumnya dapat diselesaikan dalam kurun waktu 8 semester.
  2. Telah menyesaikan 20 Point SKKM kegiatan Non-Akademik/Ekstrakurikuler sesuai dengan aturan UMN yang berlaku.
  3. Indeks Prestasi Kumulatif (IPK) sekurang–kurangnya 2,00 dan tidak ada nilai E dan/atau F.
  4. Nilai Agama, Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Inggris, Kewarganegaraan, Pancasila minimal C. Nilai D maksimal 2 mata kuliah selain Agama, Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Inggris, Kewarganegaraan, Pancasila, Tugas Akhir, dan mata kuliah yang ditetapkan oleh program studi.
  5. Telah menyelesaikan kerja magang dan lulus ujian kerja magang.
  6. Telah menyelesaikan Skripsi dan lulus ujian Skripsi.

Mahasiswa Teknik Elektro UMN akan mempelajari mengenai sistem kendali, robotika industri, mekatronika hingga sistem kendali cerdas selama masa studi di Teknik Elektro UMN. Secara umum, kurikulum Teknik Elektro UMN dapat dijelaskan sebagai berikut.

Tahun 1 : mahasiswa akan mempelajari mengenai pemahaman dasar – dasar keteknikan, matematika rekayasa, dan kalkulus. Selain itu, di tahun pertama ini mahasiswa akan diperkenalkan dengan struktur data dan algoritma.

Tahun 2 : mahasiswa akan mempelajari mengenai dasar – dasar teknik elektro, material elektro, dan dasar sistem kontrol. kemudian , mahasiswa juga akan mulai dikenalkan dengan sistem digital dan pemrograman.

Tahun 3 : mahasiswa akan mempelajari mengenai berbagai jenis sistem seperti sistem tenaga listrik, sistem sistem pengendali digital, sistem pengendali multivariabel dan desain sistem tertanam. Tidak hanya itu, di tahun ketiga ini mahasiswa akan dibekali dengan pengetahuan seputar etika – etika keteknikan.

Tahun 4 : mahasiswa akan mempelajari apa yang menjadi fokus dari program studi Teknik Elektro UMN, yakni sistem kendali, robotika industri, mekatronika, dan technopreneurship untuk mempersiapkan agar mahasiswa dapat menjadi seorang wirausaha di bidang teknologi. Pada tahun ini, mahasiswa akan melakukan kegiatan magang di perusahaan-perusahaan manufaktur hingga startup besar serta menjadi tahun persiapan untuk mengerjakan proyek tugas akhir.

Green Building Training

UMN bekerjasama dengan Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) untuk menyelenggarakan pelatihan dan sertifikasi Greenship Associate di UMN setiap awal bulan desember. Pelatihan ini merupakan fasilitas bagi mahasiswa teknik fisika UMN dan juga masyarakat luar untuk memperoleh pengalaman belajar dan juga sertifikat di bidang green building. There are a lot of things I gained ever since I enrolled at UMN. The most significant thing I got is to think out-of-the-box and get a feel, taste and how communication through design. Being active in organizations in campus has made me also active in obtaining knowledge and relation with the world.
